Now there’s a growing trend among moms-to-be that has them boldly
showing that baby bump in an artistic twist to the tummy!
Carla Tarantino-Marie is making her pregnant belly an art canvas
as a keepsake of her pregnancy.
“I planned this to be my only baby and only pregnancy,
so I wanted it to be extra special in every way,”
Carla Tarantino-Marie says.
“It’s going to be a nice way to make my big round belly
to feel a little more festive and maybe pretty.”
Belly painting is a growing trend among expectant women.
The American Pregnancy Association attributes it to the Internet
where one photo can inspire many people.
They think henna tattoos and belly painting can add to the experience.
“These are fun things to make that nine month journey easier
and more enjoyable,” Brad Imler of the American Pregnancy Association says.
That said American Pregnancy Association says you should consult your doctor
because she/he may be able to tell if you might have an adverse reaction.
It’s recommended you never put a real tattoo on your pregnant belly.
If you’re using a henna tattoo, be sure it doesn’t include black ink
because it has been chemically treated.
If you’re belly painting, be selective, too.
“You want to use ideally water-based theatrical makeup.
You want to make sure what you’re using is something hypoallergenic
and FDA compliant,” artist Robyn Thompson says.
Also avoid certain paints.
“Acrylic, latex, craft paints, tempera…just because something says
that it is non-toxic does not mean it’s appropriate for use on the skin.”
Tarantino-Marie loves the way her belly art turned out.
It’s a peaceful scene that reminds her of the things she loves,
like Greece and dolphins!
“My husband is very excited to see it.
Later, we’ll definitely take pictures of the belly,”
Tarantino-Marie says.
The belly art can be done on your own, if you have a friend with an artistic talent,
or you can go to a professional artist.
The artist in the story charges $250 for her belly scenes
and is often requested for baby shower events.
